This book brings together international experts to examine the relationships between animal and child abuse. It considers the implications for legal and social policy and the work of key professionals. Includes sections on research, ethical issues and the abuse of wild animals. Includes many academic case studies of people abusing animals for their own sick gratification and then going on to abuse people. The studies show how this might also apply to people who harm animals because society pays them to, such as slaughterhouse workers, fishermen and even vivisectionists. There are also chapters giving recommendations, such as the creation of a legal duty for vets to report suspected cases of animal cruelty, in order to prevent further abuse of animals, and of people. And there are some more general philosophical arguments in the book such as in the provocatively titled chapter 12, Is Human Rights Speciesist? 2010.
